Philip DiFabio
Jr. High School Porter
Deceased • 8/7/1966 • Age 24 • drowned
The efforts by two swimming companions to save a 24 year old Syracuse man proved fruitless yesterday afternoon after the victim panicked while being rescued at the Sandy Island Beach. Pronounced dead at the scene due to asphyxiation by drowning was Philip Michael DiFabio of 1013 Milton Ave. Dr. Warren Hollis was coroner’s physician. Pulaski state police said that DiFabio was swimming about 100 yards offshore in approximately six feet of water with two Syracuse companions, Edward C. Erickson, 21, of 211 Carlton Drive and Vincent F. Andriello, 20, of Iroquois Drive. When he began to shout for help, both Erickson and Andriello went to his aid but Erickson had to return to shore after he experienced cramps. Andriello arrived at the side of his friend, but was fought off by DiFabio, who apparently had panicked. Troopers said that DiFabio swam away from shore and Andriello before disappearing beneath the water. State police said that witnesses on shore first thought that the three men were fooling around and did not offer aid until Erickson arrived on shore and for help in finding DiFabio. The body was recovered by Peter S. Ceckowski and Michael Dimperio of Syracuse. Father Leonard of St. John’s Catholic Church in Pulaski administered the last rites at the scene. Investigating for the state police were Investigator H.F. Feigel of the BCI. Troopers DJ Dwyer and F. A. Lidestri. Mr. Di Fabio resided in Syracuse 11 years. He was a native of Italy. Mr. DiFabio was a June sociology graduate of Syracuse University and employed by Iroquois Door Co. He was a communicant of St. Brigid and St. Joseph’s Church. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Matthew DiFabio; several aunts, uncles and cousins.Services will be at 8:15 a.m. at Pirro & Sons Funeral Home and 9 a.m at St. Brigid and Joseph Church where a solemn high Mass of requiem will be celebrated. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery.
